Henry
(2014-2026)
animal, dog, and detector of the 'scent' marker for cancer
Died aged c. 12
Golden Retriever Henry was the first dog known to have the fully verifiable skill of scenting cancer in its early stages. Previous anecdotal stories of dogs being able detect it had proved difficult to prove, but in scientifically controlled tests the diagnosis was 100%. He practised until right up to his death and in his career saved the lives of almost 4000 people.Furthermore, the offspring of Henry also demonstrated the skill. This lead to an intense breeding program to be able to spread the use of cancer dogs worldwide. The unfortunate side-effect of the program and its inherent inbreeding was that the dogs themselves were often stricken with the very disease they were able to detect.OpenPlaques
